Who are we
The association was established on 22 February 1960 and is a voluntary non-governmental organisation registered under the Societies Act, Malaysia. The Committee of Management which is elected from the members of the association comprises a President, two Vice-Presidents, Honorary Secretary, Hon. Treasurer and 10 committee members. The administration of the centre is headed by an Hon. Director.
There are at present about 45 full-time staff. Eleven advisory committees assist the Committee of Management in its work. The association also depends on the kind services of its panel of honorary medical and dental officers and honorary legal adviser. Also, a large number of volunteers help out in the Centre. There are at present about 210 disabled children from ages one to 18 receiving education therapy and rehabilitation training at the centre. Another about 30 disabled adults work in the sheltered workshop.
A ‘Disabled’ is a person with Cerebral Palsy. This is a disorder of movement, posture and speech usually appearing in the early years of life. It is due to damage or failure to a small part of the brain which controls these activities to develop normally. There are several facilities at the Disabled Centre to provide free transport, education and treatment (including physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy) to the disabled children. Some of these facilities include clinics, classrooms, hydrotherapy pool, training kitchen, computer laboratory, library, music room, buses, shops, special sports training equipment and a multipurpose hall.
The physiotherapy is given individual attention and includes hydrotherapy, hippotherapy (riding for the disabled) and selective posterior rhizotomy. The occupational therapy covers physical functioning, cognitive functioning, sensory awareness, activities of daily living and therapeutic adaptations. Speech therapy covers areas such as language development, cognitive development, articulation, breathing and voice quality, speech rate 7 flow assessment and treatment, behavioural and social development, oral musculatures examination and visual auditory discrimination.

Annual recurrent requirement budget is about RM900,000. The government provides a grant amounting to about 20-25% of the expenditure. The rest is made up by sponsors and well-wishers through several fund-raising activities planned and held. Please contact the Disabled Centre directly for more information on how you can help.
Cash donations and donations in kind welcomed. Cheques made payable to Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Spastik Selangor Dan Wilayah Persekutuan – all donations are exempted from tax.
