Who are we

Diabetes Malaysia (DM) formerly known as Persatuan Diabetes Malaysia is a non-profit, non-governmental organization formed in 1981 and registered in 1983 to help people with diabetes to lead healthy and productive lives. DM has 14 State Branches and 39 District Branches with about 13,351 active members in 2018 comprising people with diabetes, medical and health professionals and others interested in diabetes. Our mission is to promote diabetes care through awareness, prevention, education and management

It is reported that some 3.6 million Malaysians are suffering from diabetes, the highest rate of incidence in Asia. The prevalence of diabetes in Malaysia is expected to increase, especially type two diabetes, which is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity

Diabetes Malaysia organizes activities to raise awareness of diabetes and its complications, to promote diabetes education and to promote and improve diabetes care. Some of the activities are as follows :

  • Diabetes Malaysia and its 14 State Branches and 39 District Branches regularly organize seminars forums, children and adults diabetes camps and health screening to increase public awareness on diabetes and help people with diabetes to better manage the disease.
  • DM HQ and many of its Branches are selling diabetic related products, especially monitoring devices at reasonable price to diabetic patients, who have to frequently monitor their blood glucose levels in order to manage their diabetes.
  • DM HQ and the Branches work with the Corporate Organizations to organize activities, such as, forums, specials projects and health screening etc to help the people with diabetes and to increase public awareness on diabetes.
  • DM HQ has established since 2008 separate Diabetes Children Fund and Diabetes Adults Fund to provide free monitoring devices to poor and needy children and eligible adults with diabetes to better manage their diabetes in order to prevent its complications.
  • DM has published a booklet entitled ‘Information Guide – Diabetes in Schools’ which provides some information on diabetes to assist the teachers and parents on how to help students to better manage their diabetes.
  • DM HQ provides a website that contains information on diabetes and the activities of the Association. Any questions on diabetes from the members of the public will be answered by our panel of experts.

Diabetes Malaysia is an affiliate of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) since 1985 and actively participates in its activities. The IDF was founded in 1950 and is an alliance of over 230 National Diabetes Associations in more than 170 countries in the World. IDF has been the Vanguard of diabetes advocacy around the globe. The mission of IDF is to promote diabetes care, prevention and cure worldwide.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14 which is the birthday of Fredrick Banting who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921. World Diabetes Day was introduced by the IDF and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1991, in response to concern over the escalating incidence of diabetes around the world. In 2007, World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day with the passage of United Nations Resolution 61/225.World Diabetes Day is represented by a blue circle logo. The blue circle is the global symbol of diabetes and signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic. The theme for WDD 2019 is ‘Family and Diabetes’. DM HQ and many of the Branches will organize activities every year during the month of November to celebrate the WDD to bring together the people to raise awareness of diabetes and to unite the diabetes community.

As a non-profit Organization, DM has to raise funds on a regular basis to support the activities organized at the National, State and District Branch levels to raise awareness on the prevention and control of diabetes and to help the people with diabetes to better manage the disease. The success of the fundraising activities depends very much on the compassion and generosity of the Companies and the members of the public.

The DM HQ / Diabetes Resources Centre is located in a two storey building owned by the Association in Petaling Jaya.
