Who are we
MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional or the National Cancer Council) is a not-for-profit social enterprise mainly tasked to pool and utilise every effort, expertise and financial aid from every faction of society, and to fight cancer and reduce the related pain, suffering and morbidity that cancer patients and their families often experience.

MAKNA registered under the Register of Societies on 10th November 1994 and officially launched on 30th March 1995. MAKNA was founded by Dato’Mohd Farid Ariffin.

Our mission
To mobilise resources in order to provide curative, preventive, research and support services to cancer patients and their families, high-risk groups and the general public, in Malaysia and the World.

Our objective
To pool and utilise all efforts, expertise and finance from all sectors of the society, to fight cancer and reduce related pain, morbidity and the suffering that cancer patients undergo.

Our focus areas

  • MAKNA’s Bursary Programme, which is a monetary assistance project that provides financially-challenged cancer patients the required support such as treatment cost.
  • The purchase of cancer-related medication and treatment at the Institut Kanser MAKNA – Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (IKM-PPUKM).
  • MAKNA Cancer Research (ongoing since 2001) – information, technology and development in finding cure for cancer.
  • To provide consistent cancer awareness and education programmes to educate and promote an understanding of a healthy lifestyle.
    Fund-raising Projects.
  • To raise sufficient funds for cancer-related services to the community.
  • To provide screening and early diagnostic facilities to enable early detection of cancer.
  • To source, collate and disseminate cancer information effectively to all levels of society.
  • To encourage, support and conduct research in basic sciences and clinical research on cancer, which could lead to innovative treatment approaches.
  • Young Cancer Survivor Scholarship, which aims to support young cancer survivors wishing to further their tertiary studies.
  • Volunteer Community Outreach Programme, which is useful for building and maintaining civil society, a sphere of organized activities are implemented in raising the quality of life.


Assistant Communications Manager

We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about reaching the community and able to assimilate online, offline, print and electronic media effectively. The candidate is accountable for delivering measurable campaigns on time, within budget and to a consistently high quality. The candidate reports directly to the President and the General Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implementing a range of communication strategies including event, online, electronic media, print activities and PR
  • Developing, managing and motivating the communications team
  • Responsible for producing communications collateral, product launches, internal events, exhibitions and design to help educate the public about cancer
  • Integrating campaigns focusing on donor retention as well as new commercials / events / campaigns including on and off line activities
  • Devising and implementing timelines and budgets
  • Delivering campaigns on time and within budget
  • Utilising market research to inform and influence campaign development
  • Brand positioning
  • Evaluating the work of the copywriters, designers and printers against the brief
  • To ensure that all communications, including on and offline, adhere to the data protection legislations

Skills / Attributes Required

  • A people person
  • Proven experience in the field of Communications
  • Degree in Communications or with 5 years of experience in a related field
  • Excellent communicator with good writing skills in English & Bahasa Malaysia
  • Age, 33 to 40
  • Exceptional organisation skills
  • A rounded, thorough understanding of the full range of communication tools
  • Excellent community awareness and branding
  • Ideas-driven individual
  • Male Chinese speaking application / candidate is preferred
