BACKGROUND/HISTORY

When Established: 11/1996

National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM) or Persatuan Angin Ahmar Kebangsaan Malaysia is Southeast Asia’s first non-profit organisation that offers affordable rehabilitation services for stroke survivors and support to their families. It was founded by Janet Yeo, who
herself suffered a major stroke in 1989 when she was in her 40’s.

On November 5, 1996, NASAM was registered followed by the opening of the first stroke-specific rehab centre in Petaling Jaya, in August 2000. To this day, Janet Yeo remains actively involved as founder and chairman.

NASAM is a strong advocate of ‘There is life after stroke’. It firmly believes that post stroke rehabilitation is critical in ensuring that every stroke survivor can return to as normal a life as possible, within the limitations of their disabilities. Its long-term mission is to make rehabilitation accessible to as many stroke survivors as possible.

Since founding its first centre, NASAM has grown significantly through the support and generosity of Malaysian corporates and the public. It has spread its wings to eight other centres in Penang, Sabah, Ampang, Malacca, Perak, Johor, Kuantan and Kedah.

NASAM’s Mission

  • To make rehabilitation accessible and affordable to as many stroke survivors as possible.
