Tax Exemption

CPS Penang (or Pertubuhan Perlindungan Kanak-Kanak Pulau Pinang in Bahasa Malaysia) is registered under the Society ACT 1966 (Reg. No PPM-001-07-28121991) since 1991 and has obtained tax-exemption status from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (or LHDN in BM) with Tax Exemption Cert. No: (JHDN.01/35/42/51/179-6.4010).  CPS Penang is also recognized by the Social Welfare Department – a Government Agency which also gives yearly grant to CPS Penang on food subsidy.  Our Accounts is subject to annual audit by the licensed auditor.

CPS Penang is a religiously unaffiliated organization that caters to neglected, abandoned, and abused children that come from dysfunctional and poverty stricken families.  We began as an initiative of Dato’ Seri Nazir Ariff in 1991 and was developed with the help of other dedicated individuals who were also doing social work in Penang. Their goal was to provide children at risk with a safe and supportive environment conducive to their healthy development. We continue to pursue this goal and thank all those that have helped make all of this possible and continue to support us.

At present CPS has around 30 to 40 children between the ages of 5 and 18 living in our care and 20 to 30 children under our outreach program on the mainland – Butterworth, Penang. These children are often referred to CPS Penang by the Social Welfare Department, schools, neighbors, and other concerned individuals. Depending on a child’s situation we seek help from and liaise with relevant NGOs, doctors, counselors and therapists to start the child on therapy programs that help them cope with their situation. These programs include mental counseling on anger management and emotions therapy, medical treatments as and when required, and various human development workshops while ensuring all the children in our care are eating healthy diets and getting adequate rest.

CPS makes education of the children in our care a priority. We put our children into the schooling system as soon as they are well settled here and for academically weak teenagers vocational training has proven to be a viable alternative to university. We also offer tuition classes as well as remedial classes for children with learning difficulties. Our efforts to assist the children in the pursuit of academic achievement helps them see new possibilities and realize their full potential. Many of our former residents have excelled in various fields, some have gone on to attain doctoral degrees, and others have gone on to compete in sports at the national level.
