The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Kota Kinabalu (SPCA KK) is a non govermental organisation which has been registered with the Registry of Societies, Malaysia since the 14th February 2006. A group of animal lovers who had been working independently for the welfare of strays and abused animals in Kota Kinabalu had decided to form a common platform so that their work can be done more effectively.

The purpose of the society is to promote a better understanding on the needs, and rights of animals in order to reduce the incidences of animal abuses.

To date, the main effort of SPCA KK has been on educating the public on responsible pet ownership, inspectorate, rescue and rehoming after vaccination and desexing.

Apart from our daily activities, we maintain a shelter at Kg Gana, Papar to rehabilitate and rehome the animals that we have rescued. Currently, we are responsible for over 300 dogs and cats in our shelter and around 50 animals fostered by volunteers.

The root cause of homeless animals is the uncontrolled reproduction of pets and strays. SPCA KK subscribes to the international practice of neutering pets and strays to contain the problem. Since our inception, we have sponsored the sterilization of countless numbers of cats and dogs. In 2021 alone, SPCA KK spent more than RM 300,000 on animal neutering and treatment, we have successfully neutered 1,530 animals.

Our work is quite varied and can be divided into the following five categories.

A) Education on responsible pet ownership. Pet owners are encouraged to neuter their pets to lessen homeless animals, as well as to improve their general health.

B) Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) projects on strays to reduce our stray population.

C) Lobbying the government on legislation and enforcement, licensing, and registration.

D) Inspectorate team to investigate cases of neglect and abuse.

E) Operating a Shelter to rehabilitate and rehome rescued animals.

Our expenses average RM 60,000.00 per month, the largest chunk (RM 25,000) of our budget goes to medical expenses. Other costs are animal food, utilities, employee salaries, etc. Our animal shelter currently houses 233 dogs and 69 cats.

Although we do receive public support, funding is a constant challenge even at the best of times. As a non-governmental organization (NGO), we rely almost entirely on public donations to survive. The pandemic has made matters even more critical.

As a registered body with the Registrar of Societies of Malaysia, our accounts are audited annually by PKF Malaysia, an independent accounting firm. Our members are furnished with an audited account at every annual general meeting and all potential donors may view our audited accounts.

All cash donations are issued a tax-exempt receipt (LHDN. 01/35/42/51/179-6.6668) upon the presentation of a transaction slip. This slip can be WhatsApp to 019 880 9660 or emailed to [email protected]
